The film, Easy Rider, directed by Dennis Hopper, is about two characters, played by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, who venture their way through landscapes to make their destination to New Orleans for Mardis Gras. Their trip takes them through random towns and a hippie commune, but more importantly through areas in which residents are narrow-minded and hateful of their hippie acts of independence, such as having long hair, and also their use of drugs. The two characters, Wyatt and Billy, use money on their search for freedom in a corrupt non-free modern society that is set by standards and norms which do not tolerate people who truly are free individuals. In the beginning of the film Wyatt and Billy resort to selling drugs to finance their trip to New Orleans. Soon after, the audience sees Wyatt stuffing the money that they had made into a snake-like tube. He then stuffs the tube into the gas tank of his stars-and-stripes American flag decorated motorcycle. This scene symbolizes that money is sleeping with America and that money fuels America. It implies that people need money in order to survive in America, so in essence, it is like Wyatt and Billy are trying to buy their freedom. Throughout the entire movie they are trying to be free from society when really they are conforming to it by using money and having it, which stimulates the society and America. They used money to buy their motorcycles, their food, and necessities, which contribute to fueling America and in turn conforming to society. Their goal of achieving freedom is being contradicted because they are using and spending money which helps to circulate America’s life. Soon after, Wyatt throws his wristwatch to the ground which is symbolic to show his newly-found freedom and his rejection to time and its link to society Later that night, they need a place to stay and they find themselves coming upon a motel.
