The Role of Magnesium in the Emergency Department
Second most abundant intracellular cation Fourth most abundant cation in the body It is an essential trans membrane and intracellular modulator of cellular electrical activity. Role in myocardial salvage, possibly by inhibiting calcium influx to ischaemic myocytes & by reducing coronary tone. It also increases the threshold for depolarisation of c. myocytes reducing the risk of malignant arrhythmia. Reduce the peripheral vascular resistance and increase cardiac output with no effect on cardiac work. Prior to 1995- many small and one large study had produced positive outcome LIMIT-2 Study (RCT) with 2316 subjects demonstrated a statistically significant 16% reduction in all cause mortality for Mg compared with placebo.
