She is obviously not only beautiful but smart and intelligent, as were the rest of the fulbright scholars so it is likely that he was feeling overwhelmed by them all, and trying to take them all in at once. ... Possibly he was referring to emotional luggage that the Fulbright scholars bring along with them, which makes the reader feel a slight tension between Hughes and Plath.
