A symbol is a sign that represents a larger idea. Harper Lee used symbols throughout To Kill A Mockingbird to show that a dissonant society is the epitome of racism and other evils that occur. She tries to show that without unity within a community there's only hatred. Harper Lee 's use of the symbol of the mad dog showed the town's racism, Atticus' struggle against it, and foreshadowed the death of Bob Ewell. "Tim was a liver-colored dog, the pet of Maycomb." Tim represented the town's racism. And racism much like the disease of rabies ravaged the town. Because Tim was the pet of Maycomb, he and his condition originated from something already dwelling within the town.
