Brittle fractures have so far been very few in number. When tensile stress and an acidic medium are present simultaneously, the FRP rod experiences brittle fracture. Brittle fractures have been reported more in USA because of use of composite insulators.
Brittle fracture doesn’t occur due to dynamic mechanical tensile stresses alone. It has been proved that in the presence of an acid and a tensile force, brittle fracture takes place. ... Brittle fracture doesn’t occur in the presence of oxalic acid.
The brittle factures so far occurred were in insulators that were only few years in service, whose tensile loads were low, that had defective seals, exposed rods and made of E glass. ... But few brittle fractures were also in insulators that did not have exposed rods and defective seals.
