In the beginning of Diane Barthel’s essay, one of her main ideas is Baudrillard’s idea of femininity and masculinity as being modes. When describing the feminine qualities it is said that a female will get what she wants, understanding that she will please others, and that she will be chosen. The idea of female narcissism is tested with advertisement. The cultural connection that can be made using this advertisement is that beautiful women are pampered, and they posses the power of getting what they want because of their beauty, but the claim gets a little complicated with the issue of class. Class is another characteristic of the advertisement, when tied into the original claim leads to a revised claim of beautiful women with class are pampered, and they posses the power of getting what they want because of their beauty and class. In the advertisement, there is a female model portrayed with a flower in her hand. Having said that, the advertisement compares with Barthels’ claim of a female pleasing herself and understandably others. In the advertisement there is one important clue that hints that the female is being pursued, first of all the fact that she is holding a flower suggests that it might be a gift from someone. Holding an exotic flower in her hand, it can be concluded that since the flower is given to the female model as a present, she is treated in special way and possibly she pursued by someone. Since the flower was an exotic flower, further more can be said about it. First of all an exotic flower, isn’t very easy to obtain and it can be assumed that it is rare. Having said that the flower is rare, another detail can be focused upon, which is the stem of the flower.
