Describe the attitude and behaviour of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in Act 5 Scene 1 and Act 5 Scene 3 and offer explanations for the changes.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were portrayed as strong characters, Macbeth was physically powerful and Lady Macbeth mentally strong.
In Act 5 Scene 1 we see Lady Macbeth who, has only just reappeared in the play after her departure in Act 3 Scene 4. We now see Lady Macbeth in a dramatically different state of mind.
Lady Macbeth’s gentle woman is telling the doctor about Lady Macbeth’s strange behaviour at night and her sleepwalking fetish. The gentle woman and the doctor then see Lady Macbeth sleepwalking, she is carrying a candle and her eyes are open ‘You see her eyes are open. ... ’ He is telling the gentle woman that lady Macbeth is frantically rubbing her hands, this action disturbs both of them.
After this they then hear Lady Macbeth speaking, the gentlewoman and the doctor listen intently to her words.
