In Country In the movie, In Country, Samantha Hughes has just graduated high school. She lives with her uncle Emmet, a Vietnam vet. The town of Hopewell thinks that Emmet has a few screws lose, after returning home from Vietnam. Sam’s father was also in Vietnam, but was killed before she was born. She is constantly asking Emmet questions about her father. She finds letters from her father, Dwayne, to her mother, Irene. This really excites her ambition to find out about her father. Sam also buys a car, which she feels gives her a lot of freedom. She gets her fathers field diary, which she finds upsetting because they are the complete opposite of the letters to her mother.
