I do believe that we are powerless over what people see or how they judge us; however, I truly believe that we do not have to have that judgment determine our identity. From reading chapters 1 and 2 of “Diversity on Campus,” it is apparent that our identity comes from our upbringing. ... All the things that mold our character and identity come from social and economic factors. ... However, the culture shock did not in anyway alter my identity. ... I had one friend who was perceived as a heavy drinker; therefore, he felt that every time we partied he had to drink himself stupid in order to live up to his identity. I know this happens quite a bit in college especially during the first and second years of college because individuals have not found their identity yet.
