As the frosty wind brushes against their faces, David and Bobbie struggle to conquer the rocky “Finger” protruding from the cascading waterfall of stones on the wall of the gigantic mountain. ... Earle Birney’s tragic narrative poem, “David” is a tale of friendship, love and death that appeals to the reader’s senses, emotions and intelligence in more ways than one. ... The horror he felt as his shaking hands shoved his best friend to a painful, dark death while a life of incredible memories flashed through his head. ... He is able to give the reader a better understanding of the emotions that consume David and Bobbie as they continue to climb up the mountain to the top of the world. ... Once the reader knows that a scarp is a steep slope or long cliff that separates two relatively level areas of differing elevations, it can be understood how dangerous it was when David clung to only a dint in the scarp of Sundance Mountain. Also one may have learned that an arete is a sharp, narrow lateral ridge, projecting from a mountain and then understands that the attempts of David and Bobbie are not as easy as they seem and take a great amount of vigorous effort and strength to succeed.
