Do you believe in miracles? YES!!! A famous phrase said by broadcaster Al Michaels during the 1980 Olympic semi-final hockey game between the then Soviet Union and the United States of America. This game, which considered by most, is the greatest moment in sports history. The game it’s self had a bigger meaning then just any Olympic hockey game. Leading up to the 1980 games at Lake Placid, New York, the United States was going through some profound changes. Many events occurred that split the nation. Vietnam had the whole country split as the country continued to debate whether it was right for American troops to be at Vietnam. The Watergate scandal had occurred. Abortion was legalized. Affirmative Action became a very controversial policy. But above all else the cold war was raging on and the fear of the Russians and the spread of communism. A major setback for the United States came on November 4th, 1979. At exactly 10:30 a.m. 130 Iranian collage students stormed the United States Embassy in Tehran and took 52 American citizens hostage. The students had not said why they were going to take over the American Embassy. All that was said was, there was to be a display opposing the admittance of the Shah into America. This struck the country with horror. The country was in need of something to unite them together. The cold war created more problems and led to an even more dramatic Olympics. The fear of the spread of communism had griped the nation and led to the famous “witch” hunts by Senator Joe McCarthy from Wisconsin. During 1979 many things happened between the Soviets and the Americans.
