The Unvanquished

The Tarnishing of a Southern Belle The Civil War introduced new situations to many people. The changes in their surroundings caused many of them to change within. William Faulkner reveals this change through Granny in The Unvanquished. Granny is a stern, highly religious, southern belle. As the war progresses she struggles with moral dilemmas. Her struggle weakens her, however, she manages to hang on to her dignity. Granny is a proper southern woman with her “hat sitting on the exact top of her head and her parasol raised even before the dew [has] begun to fall(45)”. She has high morals with which she disciplines Bayard and Ringo. When Bayard and Ringo run to Granny after having shot at a Yankee regiment screaming, “we shot the bastud” she hides them under her skirt from the Yankee officers (27).
