Great Gatsby The American Drean

The American Dream The American Dream: the dream of many since the very beginning of American civilisation, when people from other countries found in America hope for a better life. People travelled from the other side of the Ocean, others were persecuted religious refugees; but all hoping for the same: freedom, happiness, prosperity – that was the American Dream, a great expectation. ... As Tang Soo Ping points out, “the American Dream describes an attitude of hope and faith that looks toward to the fulfilment of human wishes and desires”(11). The concept American Dream has many definitions and two different sides. It is generally agreed that the American Dream symbolizes the pursuit of freedom, happiness, spiritual and material improvement. However, throughout the years, the material fraction became rather more important than the rest and the concept of the American Dream was then corrupted. If on one hand, many would say that the American Dream means a new life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, on the other hand, Cowley believes it “is a materialistic version in which the process of creating one’s self is equated with getting rich”(44).
