Analysis on Youre Ugly Too by Lorrie Moore

ÒYouÕre Ugly Too,Ó by Lorrie Moore, tells of a piece in the life of Zoe Hendricks, a college teacher, and her attempts to deal with being single. ... While at first glance, Zoe appears to be a sarcastic, outspoken woman masking feelings of insecurity, an analysis of her actions and dialogue throughout the story reveal her to be someone with far greater concerns - someone who can not be summed up in one simple sentence. ... While Zoe herself is not the narrator, the tone which Moore uses to describe her life very much sets a mood of dissapointment, which in the end turns out to be the main theme of the story. ... Also, Moore spends a good amount of time talking about how things are ÒsupposedÓ to be - it is clear that Zoe, who lives alone in a large house despite the fact that it leaves her with far too much room, is somewhat obsessed with the fact that her life should ideally be much different than it is. ... Of course, ÒYouÕre Ugly TooÓ is a light story, and is not without hope. Jerry the cab driver (or ÒJareÓ as Zoe calls him) is a nice man who appears to have feelings for Zoe - they may be requited, too, as she uses his name in a story she makes up to tell Earl.
