Wilson’s introduction to the play serves to inform the reader of the historical events preceding the play’s plot, as well as detail the physical environment in which the action of the play will take place. By detailing the hardships faced by blacks in their move North, Wilson establishes an atmosphere not only of poverty, but of alienation and hardship. The setting further establishes this theme, as the play takes place in a destitute home in the black section of Pittsburgh. However, Wilson alludes to the atmosphere of political and social unrest towards the introduction’s end, mentioning that the “hot winds of change” had begun to blow already.
