In e. e. cummings’s poem, “maggie and millie and molly and may,” he expresses the idea that nature can touch people in ways that no other single thing can. Cummings does this by telling a story about four girls who go to the beach and describing each of their experiences. Through these incidents, cummings shows how nature can help people discover who they really are. Cummings begins describing the girls’ experiences with maggie by saying, “maggie discovered a shell that sang so sweetly she couldn’t remember her troubles. ... In the third and fourth stanzas of cummings’ poem, he makes a contrast between the good and the bad that can happen to people.
