a) The problem of evil and suffering can be seen as both a theological problem along with a philosophical one. When considering the problem of evil it is important to note two main types of evil; natural evil which includes natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanoes and also illness and disease, and also moral evils that are committed by humans through their personal free will. It may also be significant to take into consideration the different levels of evil that may be present in our world today. By this, it is meant that there is a clear difference between a child being “naughty” and a murderer being “evil”. ... Another way we can explain what is meant by the problem of evil from a Christian perspective is by looking at the “inconsistent triad”. Its looks at three ideas, these being that firstly “evil exists”, secondly, “God is all-loving” and finally “God is omnipotent”. Clearly, all these three factors cannot be true at the same time, leading to a problem surrounding the issue of evil and suffering. b) One theodicy put forward in an attempt to explain the problem of evil was that of Augustine who wrote “The confessions”.
