Australia has one of the lowest donation rates in the world in 2001 the Australian donor rate was equivalent “to 9.5 donors per million of Australia’s population” (ANZDATA Stats as at June 2002) the nation with the highest donor rate is Spain with approximately “39.9 donors per million population” (World Health Organization Statistic 2002)
Australia’s low donor rate is a major health concern for those affected by organ failure and the issue is only getting worse, there are many factor which may provide some incite to the low donor rates in Australia these include; lack of knowledge and understanding which leads the public to believe negative media and myths, lack of positive media such as transplant success stories and general advertising of the importance of organ donation, misconceptions that by signing to be a donor on the official registry or on a driver license you are granted to be a donor, these are only a record of intent to donate your next-to-kin have the right to say yes or no after your death and the laws surrounding organ donation in Australia.
