Literary Devices in The Yellow Wallpaper
In the effective short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the narrator suffers from clinical depression, but her family and friends insist that she is only experiencing a case of the nerves. ... From the beginning of the story the narrator mentions how she can’t stand her room, especially the wallpaper. “I don’t like our room one bit… [The wallpaper] is dull enough to confuse the eye… enough to constantly irritate and provoke study.” When she talks about the wallpaper pattern she says that it’s “lame” and if you follow the uncertain curves for a small distance “they suddenly commit suicide – plunge off at outrageous angles, destroy themselves in unheard of contradictions.
