"Advertisements are one of the most influential forms of media in modern society. They are a common and accepted part of daily life, in print form in magazines and newspapers, as well as on television and on cinema screens. Advertisements are on the radio and are increasingly found on the Internet. The main reason behind commercial advertising is to increase familiarity and friendliness with the name and image of the company. Advertising, with its daily repetitions and high ease of access, is a truly powerful medium. If advertisements had no effect, then companies would not spend so much money on advertising each year. By researching the different meanings that ads try to convey, it is possible to learn about the society in which we live. It is our own experience and knowledge that allow us to make sense out of what we see. Furnham, Babitzkow, Smerdelam and Uguccioni (2000) examined female stereotypes shown in French and Danish television commercials. Belkaoui & Belkaoui, Courtney & Lockeretz, and Schneider & Schneider demonstrate that there are big age differences in gender portrayal in advertisements since the 1970's (as cited in Furnham, et al, 2000). Gunter explained that gender role stereotyping has had effects on men, women, and especially young people (as cited in Furnham, et al, 2000) [same comment as above].
