Readers of Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” have mixed feelings and opinions about this work. This is understandable, in that the “modest” proposal is really quite outrageous. ... This persona carries throughout the whole work, but the reader can see the true identity of the narrator simply by the proposal itself. The narrator is unaware that his proposal will be rejected. ... He has estimated the number of babies that could be sold for food at about 100,000 and has made a proposal as to how much each child would cost based on weight. ... This should show the reader that this proposal cannot be taken seriously. ... Swift, through this essay, shows that the Irish people could not help themselves sufficiently, and thus a proposal as radical as this seemed the only way to help the nation. ... They feel the Irish are no better than animals in that they are only good for “breeding”, and thus the proposal to eat the children seems only natural to them.
