THE STONE CARVERS
Klara’s Relationship with the characters in the novel Relationship is defined as a particular type of connection existing between two people (2). In the novel, “The Stone Carvers”, by Jane Urquhart, the protagonist Klara experiences love, loss, and war. The relationships that Klara had with Joseph Becker her grandfather, Tilman her brother and Eamon O’sullivan will be critically analyzed and explained. For instance how her relationship with the characters changed and what brought about these changes. In the novel, the author characterizes Klara and her grandfather as having a close relationship. “When she was a child, her grandfather taught her how to whittle a small piece of wood” (1, pg.38). This quote explains that when Klara was young her grandfather took the time to teach her how to carve wood. Klara spending most of her time in her grandfather’s workshop making toy animals shows the close relationship that she had with her grandfather. She transferred some of her knowledge in wood carving to making exotic species and dolls. In the novel, Klara’s grandfather is portrayed as her role model because of the various things he taught her. Due to constant interaction between Klara and her grandfather, a strong sense of friendship was built. Klara and her grandfather enjoyed the many simple pleasures of life; she spent most of her time listening to the old man’s entertaining stories about how the procession had visited the four outdoor altars, one situated in each corner of the acre that would hold the church and the graveyard, made by Father Gstir himself from cedar coughs. The relationship between Klara and her grandfather did not change in any way. The relationship between Klara and her grandfather is the type of relationship that exists between many people and their grandparents.
