An essay in Signs of Life, "Weve Come a Long Way, Maybe: Gender Codes in American Culture," written by Sonia Maasik and Jack Solomon says, "A gender code is a culturally constructed belief system that defines and dictates the appropriate roles and behavior for men and women in society…. [G]ender codes are often justified on the basis of appeals to the ‘natural’ differences between the two sexes…. [Gender codes] usually reflect cultural values rather than natural facts (476)." Examples of part of the gender code are such things like: the guys always pays on the date, women stay at home while the men work, and women should not have high quality jobs. ... The fact that children think like this just shows us that the gender codes have not changed much.
Since the gender codes have not changed much, the people that want to change the gender code must take action. ... Men can help make the gender codes change too. ... Maybe the people that want to make the gender codes different are just scared of what everyone else would say if they did something.
