Advertising Missionaries America has a love affair with the market and all it can produce. In the video, “Advertising Missionaries”, there is a team of four individuals that were trained by Western society to travel to remote areas of Papua New Guinea in order to market certain products in return giving them the life of luxury. Is American advertisers truly concerned with the well- being of the people in those remote areas, or do they just see a profitable market share ready to burst? “In Papua New Guinea, where over three quarters of the population cannot be reached by the regular advertising mediums of television, radio or print, "the market" must be developed by other means.” The U.S. economy had found that “other means” by the way of Elijah, Peter, Robert, and Tina who are the trained actors ready for action. I want to take a close look at how materialism and mass media are presented by the actors and how it is accepted by the traditional Yaluba people.
