Western Religious Traditions In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. The earth was without form or void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. And God said, "Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. Genesis 1: 1-5 Christianity is one of the most widely practiced religions in the world today. It is based around the belief of one supreme ruler, God. The main guide that Christians base their life around is the Bible which is a collection of books collected over 1000’s of years. To Christians it is a holy book. “Worshippers believe that the use of biblical texts in liturgy put them in touch with God’s actions in history.” (Weaver 5) Its largest groups are the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox churches, and the Protestant churches; in addition to these churches there are several independent churches of Eastern Christianity as well as numerous sects throughout the world. The main and most important belief in Christianity is the belief in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Christians also believe that when you die the soul, depending on whether you have committed yourself to God or not goes to Heaven or Hell.
