Today civilization is so far advanced in technology and medicine that little may be known about the origins of medicine. ... There has been drastic progress since the time of the Egyptians and Ancient Greece. These are some of the ancient peoples who gave us the starting point to develop such highly complex and sophisticated technology and knowledge of medicine. How do we know about the methods and practices of such ancient people? Knowledge of Egyptian medicine came mainly from the writings of the Greeks and Romans, among them Homer, Herodotus, Hippocrates, and Pliny (Margotta 12). The most ancient source of information about the medicine of the Greeks was also derived from the work of Homer (Margotta 22). Each of these two civilizations contributed important information about medicine. However, there are many similarities and differences between the knowledge and contributions made by Egypt and Ancient Greece concerning diagnosis, surgery, and treatment in the medical field. ... The method for diagnosis in ancient Greece came to be based on that which was developed by Hippocrates, who was the leader of a medical school and guild in Cos and is known as the "father of medicine.
