In the film American History X, Black people killed Derek・s father, and because of that Derek・s anger with Black people had continued through out his life. Through this film the art of the director・s techniques sometimes worked to create and other times to destroy values of black and white power to make people, and especially Derek, see how things can be different than people think. The specific scenes I chose are the scene that shows from how racism ideology was built to when it was destructed for Derek. Oliver Stone says art restore values in the ways of destroying the false-not all values, not all authority-and create the good and virtuous; to let people see there is not only one truth and to make people realize what can happen. In this movie Danny was analyzing and interpreting his brother, Derek・s life. Danny says Derek would say it all started when their father died, but it actually started before that. The camera goes to a scene where they are in the dining room and deciding they are going to meet for the game. Suddenly, Derek talks about Professor Sweeny and how he teaches them about Black culture. The camera zooms on the father unhappy face about any of the black culture. His dad told Derek this affirmative black action is Negro bullshit and tells him to just read the book that Sweeny gave him, but don・t believe in any of it. Then the father tries to make the black people seem worse by starting to talk about them at his work; two black guys replaced the two white guy・s place because they were black, not because they were good, and it is all crap.
