Marriage and Friendship in "Thus Spoke Zarathustra"
In Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Nietzsche brings us the idea of the overman. ... After ten years in the mountains, Zarathustra, now enlightened, travels back down to bring a gift to the people. ... Through Zarathustra’s speeches we see Nietzsche’s arguments and assumptions of how we should live.
In the speech “On Child and Marriage,” we have a clear image of Nietzsche’s thoughts on marrying and having a child. In this speech Zarathustra starts out by asking and answering the question of who is entitled to wish for a child. ... He indicates that you should desire to be higher yourself, suggesting the notion of looking for the overman, self-overcoming,
Zarathustra goes on to give us “the meaning and truth of marriage.” He calls marriage “the will of two to create the one that is more than those who created it.” Clearly he’s saying that marriage should be the purpose of creating a higher being.
