‘The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner’
1. ...
‘The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner’ was written in 1945, during World War 2. ... When readers understand that a soldier wrote it during a war, they can easily perceive the ‘nightmare fighters’ as soldiers and presume why the voice of the poem, the gunner, has died.
Jarrell’s descriptive note about the ball turret and how it was used helps his readers imagine what environment the ball turret gunner lived in during his service. The cultural context of his note also helps Jarrell convey his imagery of birth, life and death in the poem. For example, in Jarrell’s note, he describes the gunner as being ‘hunched upside down in his little sphere, he looked like a foetus in the womb’, this imagery is called upon in the poem in the first line ‘From my mother’s sleep I fell into the State.
