Tim Dodd is a general manager of Dakota Growers Pasta (DGP). DGP is a vertically integrated pasta company, headquartered in Carrington, North Dakota. Dakota Growers Pasta controls all of the aspects of its production, from the growing of the wheat used to make the pasta to the final product, which is the pasta. Consumption of pasta in the US was approximately six to seven pounds of durum wheat-based pasta per capita. Each year, between 1967 and 1984, this rose about one pound. The increase in Italian-style restaurants helped to stimulate the pasta industry. Primarily single households or families consumed pasta. Also, pasta was relatively quick to prepare and was healthy to eat. This also contributed to a large consumption of pasta by households. There were four segments in the dry pasta market. These segments were: ingredient, private and brand label retail, food service, and government bids. Each segment could be further broken down into private-label and brand-label products. Private label products ere produced by a firm and had another firm’s label on them.
