In this novel every month begins with a recipe. This is not surprising since the main character is wonderful cook and much of the story centers around the kitchen, but mostly the recipes symbolizes the main character’s emotions. January--we are introduced to Tita and the rest of her family. As the youngest daughter of a well-to-do family, it is Tita’s destiny to never marry and to care for her mother till her death. We learn of the circumstances of her birth, whereas soon after her father passes away and her mother’s milk dries up and she is unable to feed her youngest daughter. Nacha, the cook takes charge of feeding Tita and from then on the kitchen becomes Tita’s domain. We are also introduced to Tita’s sisters, who are the opposite of her. Whereas Tita thrives in the kitchen, her sisters are a little afraid. They believe that it is a place full of danger. The one time that her sisters join her in the kitchen, Rosaura, the oldest, burns her hand. Afterwards Tita is forbidden to play with her sisters, so Nacha becomes not only her playmate, but also her confidante.
