People in a state of suspended passage Ammu Ammu tries to preserve time in her head because she can’t let go of being parted from her children for any length of time. What happens to Ammu is one of the most tragic things I have read. Ammu has adult blood relations—a mother, an older brother, an aunt. Irrespective of the Ayemenem household, she dies alone in a strange room, with her twins separated. But how could Baby Kochamma have possessed her cream buns, wielded the authority and ownership, if Ammu hadn’t been thrown out of the house by Chacko? Who is Chacko to throw out Ammu? What would he get by throwing out Ammu and destroying the childhood of Rahel and Estha? Would Sophie Mol’s spirit rest in deeper peace?
