... We’re obsessed with what kinds are available, how high they can get us, how much they cost, who’s doing them, who isn’t. America is consumed in a “War on Drugs” with “Just Say No” posters wallpapering school hallways, billboards, television and radio airwaves. ... However with all the publicity illicit drugs have been getting in today’s media, the line between right and wrong, good and bad is becoming more blurred. ... More and more casual drug use is being incorporated into movies and television. Of course Hollywood believes it is its job to help fight this drug epidemic by making movies about the harmful effects drugs have on health and happiness. Are these movies really condoning drug use or are they really promoting it to America’s impressionable youth? ... However these movies still show the drug users as enjoying their high and although it may get them into trouble, the message it is sending is simply that there is a difference between drug use and drug abuse. ... In the 1920’s, Prohibition was at its high point. The possession and consumption of alcohol was illegal and movies in which alcohol was the theme were everywhere, much like drug movies are today. ... Illicit drugs are glorified by Hollywood and targeted to today’s youth desperate to rebel simply because it’s viewed as the dangerous thing to do. ... Harry Goldfarb, played by Jared Leto, his friend Tyrone, played by Marlon Wayans, and Harry’s girlfriend Marion, played by Jennifer Connelly, are all junkies. ... Harry’s mother, Sarah Goldfarb, played by Ellen Burstyn, has an obsession with television, food, and popularity. She’s a lonely woman who just wants to be on television and for everyone to like her. ... Marion’s addiction to cocaine intensifies as she turns on Harry, the only person she has left after her parents cut her off. ... Everyone’s dreams are shattered and they all end up alone. ... The lighting is very dark throughout the movie, except during Harry’s recurring dream sequence in which Marion is standing on a pier and he is calling for her, although no sound is coming out of his mouth. ... Drugs ruined these people’s lives.
“Traffic” is a film by Steven Soderbergh focused on drugs, but unlike “Requiem”, it is actually focused on America’s “War on Drugs.” It tells the story of the lives of three different groups of people who represent different levels on the drug trade food chain. Mexico and the United States are at war against each other and a huge drug-trafficking conspiracy across the border. ... They are waging the war in Mexico and learn that two rival drug cartels are vying for control of the drug smuggling in Tijuana. ... They are trying to bring down Carlos Ayala, the American importer for the Mexican drug rings. After Carlos is arrested, his wife Helena, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones, is shocked when Carlo’s confidant Arnie Metzger, played by Dennis Quaid, finally reveals her husband’s dirty little secrets to her.
