Jihad and its Implications in the Modern World
Jihad is one of the most relevantly controversial and politically consequential topics in today’s world. The interpretation of the word has and may in the future almost entirely alter the world. ... The meaning of term Jihad although complex, had been distorted and misused the suit the purposes and interests of some of the non-Muslims. This misinterpretation has led to more wars which I think contrary to the intentional effect of jihad as perceived by the Qu’ran. Jihad is not the indispensable tool used for the sole purpose of eliminating and preferably eradicating people and races that do not follow the religion of Islam, as has been misunderstood by much of the west. ... Well to a Muslim and possibly some non-Muslims it is in their best interest to publicize and clarify the actually meaning, interpretation and use of the term Jihad in order to counteract the wrong. This in turn is essential to achieving a better and more peaceful world than does exist.
Sherwin Jackson, a Professor of Islamic study at the University of Michigan, has, in his article, concisely and orderly presented an argument that not only explains the meaning of the term Jihad but describes its birth in the history of Islam and demonstrates its practical use in the pre-modern and modern world. The article and, in turn, its author’s main objective is to present a fair and truthful argument, backed up by facts, that would eliminate the misconceptions and stereotypes about Jihad that exist in the mind of the reader and secondly and more importantly to exhibit his flawless claim the “Islam is a religion of peace”. ... I will then proceed to the main purpose of this paper and article: How Jihad incorporates into all this. I will explain the use and purpose of Jihad at the time of revelation, its interpretations and use in classical jurist tradition (post-prophetic era) and finally its relevance in modern times (as laid out in the article).
Professor Jackson starts off his article with an understanding of how Islamic law operates and implements itself which, I believe, is helpful, if not crucial, in order to understand the concept of jihad namely its history. ... Therefore a new system was to be devised that would interpret and preserve the law such as not to create conflict within the Islamic world. ... Back in pre-modern times and the period of the revelation Islamic Law was the only law that would prevail in Muslim communities.
