From “The Tell-Tale Heart,” written by Edgar Allan Poe, a man shows his madness through the process of killing an old man. ... On the other hand, Charlotte Perkins Gilman describes the narrator in her story “The Yellow Wallpaper” as a woman who suffers with hysterical tendencies and has a problem with self-control. ... She is irritated by the yellow wallpaper and has a fear of the pattern on the wall, which looks like “a woman stopping down and creeping about behind that pattern” (1665) She also has anger and hatred toward her husband, John, and his sister, Jennie, because they cannot understand how much she really suffers from her paranoia and surrounding situation, especially with regard to the wall paper. ...
