HERO'S JOURNEY In all movies, you will find different characters that follow different roles. In the movies, you also will find a hero, mentor, threshold guardian, herald, shape shifter, shadow and a trickster. These roles can be played by one or more characters or even things. Mentors are usually figures that help or train the hero in some way. The mentor or mentors can teach the hero things in a specific manor or just all at once. A mentor can also be an inner coder of ethics that the hero follows. In the movie, “Training Day”, there are a few mentors. The hero in this movie is a man named Jake. His mentors are Alonzo, Roger, and Smiley. In the begging of this story, Jake was happy and nervous because it was his first day as a narcotics agent. This is when he meets his commanding officer Alonzo at the donut shop. As the day goes on, Alonzo shows Jake everything that he knows about the streets and how to survive as a narcotics agent. "To protect the sheep you gotta catch the wolf. And it takes a wolf to catch a wolf."(“Training Day) Alonzo is telling Jake that not everything in the world is just black and white. Jake had seen Alonzo do many things that Jake thought should not be done. Alonzo is trying to teach him that not everything is easy in the world. In order to know the job, they sometimes must act like the criminals not only to lock up the big time criminals but also to stay alive as well.
