EVERY CONTACT LEAVES A TRACE Forensic science has been used over the years to help solve murders and crimes worldwide. The following people have contributed to the art of forensic science by making it easier to solve the whodunit mystery. Alphonse Bertillion was a man who was appalled with the way police tried to solve crimes and how records were kept. He was determined to find a way to make this task easier and about a year after he left being a records clerk, he did. He would use body and head measurements to easily identify criminals. In 1884, Bertillion identified 241 and was recognized for developing the first scientific method of identifying a criminal to be used by a police force. Prior to this discovery, the only way to figure out who committed a crime was to rely on someone’s memory and that is not always the easiest task to do. The Bertillion system, as it soon came to be called, made identification possible without the witness being there. As well as this, Bertillion also created the portrait parle. The system was a precise method that described people’s facial and physical characteristics. This system is still used today but because faster and easier methods, such as fingerprinting, have been discovered, it is not used as much. Edward Henry was a very unique man who created a phenomenal way to solve crimes. He became very interested in the Bertillion ways of identifying criminals when he was appointed office of inspector general of the Bengal police.
