A whole batch of new guitar-based bands took attention away from American pop and generated such media interest and excitement that the new "Britpop" scene was being compared to the golden age of the British music industry of the mid-1960s. ... But what is Britpop? ... Britpop is more a term for a popular phase in the UK in the middle of the nineties and not for a music epoch. Everyone thought that Blur and Oasis were Britpop, but Blur hated the term “Britpop” and felt misunderstood whereas Oasis only wanted to be Rock’n’Roll and said they only know “Shitpop”. Blur are a huge reason for Britpop. ... Their songs contained situations in English life that celebrated being English, hence the term Britpop which mainly Blur shaped. ... Away from the new Britpop there were further experiments by more established artists.
