On Characterization
Characterization is one of the essential parts of a short story. ... Theme is the soul of short stories, and characterization as well as plot, setting, etc. ... However, characterization is different from plot and setting etc. ... Therefore, a successful short story must have successful characterization.
To follow, I¡¯d like to discuss the features of the characterization in short stories which is different from that in novels, and the methods of characterization.
The difference between the characterization in short stories and that in novels is caused by the compactness of short stories. ... As a result, a short story writer requires more demanding skills on characterization than a novelist. This is not to say that a novelist has no need of high skills on characterization. In other words, a short story writer has to be more selective in deciding what will be included and what will be excluded in characterization as well as in the writing of the whole story. Specifically, with regards to the methods of characterization, a short story writer should have a wise judge on deciding which methods to take on characterization, which will be the main and effective methods and which will be the subordinate methods, and at the same time considering the compactness and completeness of the story.

The above methods of characterization are not singularly used in a short story. ... Yet they are all indispensable for the characterization and for the theme of the short stories further.
