The film Les 400 Coups was Francois Truffaut’s debut feature film, he arrived in the film making industry following a brief period working as a film critic writing for for André Bazins "Cahiers du Cinéma," during which time Truffaut became renowned for his sharp and unforgiving style of critique. ... Les 400 Coups was released in 1959 and soon became known as one of the most influential films during the new wave period and as a result was at the forefront of a movement that had a worldwide impact on the film industry for over a decade.
The title, Les 400 Coups literally translated means, The 400 Blows; however, since its an idiom, a direct translation is does not really give us any idea what to expect. ... Les 400 Coups tells the story of thirteen year old Antoine growing up in Paris; he lives at home in a cramped flat with his mother, and his step-father. Throughout the film it is evident that Antoine feels neglected by his mother and thus turns to rebellious behavior as a means by which to get the attention he so desperately craves. Both supposed parents are constantly engaged in their own personal activities much to the detriment of Antoine’s upbringing. Antoine continues to get in trouble both at home and at school whether he is guilty or not seems irrelevant. The only time that Antoine seems happy is when he is outside particularly with his friend Rene, one exception being when he goes to the cinema with his parents; it is also apparent that Antoine, much like Truffaut, has a fascination with the world of film. Eventually Antoine leaves school with Rene at which point he also leaves home, they both stay at Rene’s house and take to the street during the day. One day they go to Antoine’s father’s office where they steal a typewriter, on discovering Antoine attempting to replace it Monsieur Doinel takes Antoine to the police where he is kept in over night as a result, his mother requests that he be taken in to state care. Antoine is consequently driven into the countryside to a nearby youth correctional facility, and escapes not long after his arrival during a game of football.
