What is “Spring Festival”? The Spring Festival is the lunar
Chinese New Year. During this holiday, every family sets off
firecrackers and puts up couplets on their gates to celebrate in a
happy life in the coming year.
There is an interesting legend about the Spring Festival.
Long, long ago, there was a ferocious monster called “year”. ... The Heavenly God locked this monster into
remote mountains but allowed him to go out once a year. Just after
twelve months had passed, “year” came out of the mountains. ...
Some said that “year” was afraid of the red color, flames, and noises. ... Seeing red color, hearing loud
sounds, “year” trembled with fear. ... The monster “year” was
terrified. ... The
monster “year” was thus subdued, and the custom of celebrating the
lunar New Year was passed down from then.
