People hold different values regarding our wilderness and national parks; these values influence and shape the law and public policy. The two conflicting views people have about wilderness areas are 1- that wilderness is a precious gem, a place for one to behold the beauty of the untouched land and supply a home for thousands of species of animals and 2- that the wilderness is a capital gain; the resources are valuable, therefore we must take advantage of them. The term wilderness, as defined by the Merriam- Webster dictionary, means (1): a tract or region uncultivated and uninhabited by human beings (2): an area essentially undisturbed by human activity together with its naturally developed life community b: an empty or pathless area or region. Under the Wilderness Act of 1964, wilderness areas are protected and valued for their ecological, scientific, historical and experiential resources; the law protects these values for future generations.
