Listening to music in 2002, there are some troubling images and sounds that anyone is bound to see just flipping through the radio or listening to their favorite CD. Some would say that music is fine as it is now. But experts are saying that there has begun to be way too much violence in modern music. ... The rate of violence and controversial lyrics in music have grown to new lengths since most rappers and rock musicians in the late 90’s decided that the more controversy stirred up in the media, the more money that particular artist is bound to make. Our society needs to continue to examine how to censure violent music for teens because of how much teens actually listen to music, also because studies show that some of the violence in America was enacted through music.
One reason for censoring violent music is because most young teens live to listen to music. “American adolescents listen to approximately 10,500 hours music between the periods of 7th to 12th grades. ... ” This statistic is very important to society because it shows just how much children and young adults are being influenced by music in today’s society. This is what propels the argument, “Does music affect the way children and young adults live their lives?” A study found that when comparing adolescents who listened to heavy metal music, pop music, and classical music, those who preferred classical music had the lowest score on a delinquency scale, and those who preferred heavy metal had the highest score.
