THE PEOPLE VS LARRY FLYNT
Directed by Milos Forman
Running time 130 mins
Certificate 18
OK, before we start, this is not a trouser-tussle kind of film. ... Dont let what people like Gloria Steinem have said convince you to not go see this film. ... Of course, this means that most bozos wont get what hes on about, so its up to you people to rise above that cinema cant tackle serious issues baloney and come out of that multiplex knowing that you are bold enough to engage in discourse. ... After all, is it right to show people fucking in a magazine. ...
After all, Larry Flynt became successful by selling pornography, which means people bought it. Larry Flynt became very successful, and that means a lot of people bought it. Are they all wrong, or bad people? Was Flynt corrupting all of them? ... But imagine two happy people, happily fucking, and wanting to make other people happy by showing them photos of them, the happy people, fucking happily? ... Id rather live in a world where people can express themselves utterly freely, without hurting or denying anyone else. But the problem is, thats too difficult for most people to understand. ... I do listen to other people. ...
The center point of the film is not the rise to power of Flynt (Woody Harrelson) as a purveyor of filth, or his relationship with his po white trash wife, Althea (Courtney "tomorrows Bette Midler" Love). Marvelous as both are, the film is about the relationship between Flynt and his first amendment lawyer, Isaacman (Edward Norton). ...
Flynt is, after all, an infuriating character. ... ), he never really sees anything wrong with showing naked people doing stuff to each other with things with straps, studs and batteries. ...
Similarly missed out on amidst all the brou-ha-ha about the central performances (which we wont go on about here, as youll have read it squillion times in other review by now) is Woodys brother, Brett Harrelson, as Larrys brother Jimmy Flynt. ... Lots of cases were fought and lost by the secular humanists, as they were referred to, and it took the money and determination of people like Flynt to really push the battle lines back. So he, and people like him, became uneasy but essential comrades with groups who opposed the content of pornographic magazines because of how it was obtained, rather than because it was inspired by the Devil.
