Understanding Your Children Your child has just spoken his/her first word and whether it may be “Mummy”, “Daddy”, “Ball” or “Dog”, its wonderful to know that your child has finally developed the confusing jumble of babbling and squealing into an actual word. But where do they go from here? How do they progress from just saying one word to sentences? When will they be talking as rapidly and fluently as adults? Jenika Rivera explores the complexity of Child Language Acquisition, whilst taking a detailed look into its stages and how children successfully learn how to talk. Pre-Verbal Stage It may be a surprise but that incoherent mixture of various sounds a baby frequently makes really does mean something. This period of ‘babbling’ occurs roughly from 7 months onwards, in which babies experiment with the different types of noises they are capable of producing, regardless of the language spoken by the family. During this time, they learn how to replicate sounds, control the pitch and volume of their voice and how to move their lips to produce particular noises. This allows the child to practice consonant sounds and intonation. Eventually, they also learn how to express their needs and wants by babbling in reaction to certain stimuli. “I could tell which foods Daniel liked by the sounds he’d make when he saw them” says Sarah Lazarus, mother of two. “He’d make this excited gurgling noise every time he saw bananas at the grocers. It was so cute”.
