E.C. Pilliod Lecture On Thursday, September 25th, 2003 Marshall Sashkin spoke at the Kent State Charles J. Pillion Lecture Series. The title of Sashkin’s speech was “Leadership That Matters”. Sashkin believes that most people have a misconception that good leadership means that people do a good job and do it well. He says that this describes good management, which not always sufficient for leadership. Sashkin says leadership is about three things. The first is developing in followers the elements of character needed for self-leadership. Basically what he is saying is that a leader should develop followers to be able to do things on their own and lead themselves at times the leader isn’t available.
