A need has been identified by a Working Party of various representatives of Wealdshire County Council for a leisure centre in the town of Sherbury. The Working Party was commissioned by the Chief Executive Officer to consider a variety of evidence. The Report concludes a need for improved leisure facilities and recommendations to implement improvements. BACKGROUND AND INTRODUCTION. 2.1 As a result of mounting pressure and growing concern amongst a variety of organisations and the public at large regarding the lack of leisure facilities within the town of Sherbury, Wealdshire, the Chief Executive of the Council formed a Working Party to investigate the feasibility of a Leisure Centre. The Working Party consisted of representatives from The Planning Department, The Architectural Department, The Community Liaison Office and The Sports Advisory Office. 2.2 The Working Party considered information from a variety of sources, including the General Public, The Police, The Sherbury Chronicle, local sports clubs and associations and the Town Councillors. FINDINGS. 3.1 The Working Party has considered reports submitted by the Police that indicate that within the previous 12 months vandalism has risen by 32% and teenage arrests for drunk and disorderly behaviour have risen by 24%. 3.2 Reports submitted by Social Workers have identified an increased incidence of teenage alcoholism and an increase in gang culture prevailing in the town centre and housing estates. The conclusions drawn by the Social Workers for this increasing problem is that boredom and frustration is the principal cause. 3.3 A recent campaign by the Sherbury Chronicle for the improvement of leisure facilities has identified that the General Public overwhelmingly blame the absence of leisure facilities as the principal cause of the social problems presently experienced by the town. 3.4 A lobby group amongst the town’s Councillors has been canvassing actively for a leisure centre to be provided, recently stating that the only thing the town has to offer is violent films and ten public houses in the town centre.
