Contact

Contact I had never seen the movie Contact before, starring Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey, and honestly wasn’t really looking forward to it. I had seen many previews for the movie when it came out in theatres and now on television, but I reluctantly went to Blockbuster, rented the DVD, and popped some popcorn. I watched with a notepad next to me on my desk so I could jot a few things down if needed. Once the main character Ellie, played by Foster, is an adult and about twenty minutes into the movie, I was hooked. I couldn’t believe it, I actually really liked it. After watching the movie in its entirety, I planned on watching it again within the next few days to watch more closely and actually take some notes this time. After doing so, one topic in the movie that I wanted to explore more in depth was the controversy between religion and science. I am not a very religious person and nor have I ever been pushed to be so my parents. They were both raised in strict Baptist and Methodists churches and for many reasons both agreed not raise their children this way. I believe in the idea of God and the power of a higher being, but as I have gotten older and taken courses in college such as Geology and Astronomy, floods of questions on the topic of God and religion have been abundant in my mind for the past few years.
