You've Gotta Taste This...Or Do You? As the beautiful redheaded girl, all decked out in leopard print attire, drives her blue convertible, with leopard print interior, she holds a Doral Light cigarette in her right hand. With her leopard print scarf, along with her long hair, blowing in the wind, she passes the mountains. Her bright smile extends from one ear to the other, it almost seems as though she enjoys the smoke streaming from her new 'splendidly blended' cigarette blowing in her face. How could breathing in smoke from a cigarette be healthy? Smoking is very unhealthy and can cause several illnesses. When people see ads like this one, especially young females, they see this pretty girl holding a cigarette and think that if she smokes she will look as cool and pretty as the girl in the advertisement. Advertisers have begun targeting females, which is why the percentage of female teenagers who smoke has increased greatly in the last several years. A survey done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that among high school students, 27.7 percent of girls are smokers and 12.9 percent of these girls smoke frequently. Advertising companies lure adolescent girls in by using the magazine industry. They use ads like this one that link smoking to fashion, slimness, and beauty. For instance, when Virginia Slims started advertising their cigarettes the number of girls smoking hit its highest percentage rate. That particular ad always had a gorgeous girl in it, leading young girls to believe that is how they would look if they were holding a Virginia Slim. This ad may be appealing, but what is not appealing are the numerous health complications and effects that come along with smoking.
