Multiculturalism can be defined as the right to express and share cultural custom and beliefs and receive equality of treatment and opportunity, with the obligation to support Australia’s democratic institutions and values and respect the right of others to express their culture and beliefs. In addition Multiculturalism aspires to an inclusive, harmonious and diverse society and has been formally recognised in Australian government policy for three decades. I will explore both the development of multiculturalism in Australia with regards to immigrants and some modern issues which have developed in recent years. Australia is a multicultural society and with that gains many advantages. However, there are mixed feelings among the community about being multicultural. These conflicting points of view, stemming from things like the amount of education a person has, their upbringing, media exposure of certain race issues and the political nature of society, present some disadvantages accompanying all the different cultures, beliefs and understandings of the world we share. There are some arguments for and against whether Multiculturalism is good for Australia. On the one hand, Multiculturalism presents a unique Australia since we have a very diverse sense of culture. We have this diversity in view of the fact that we have so many different cultures living here. For instance, Melbourne has the largest community of Greeks outside of Athens. This is amazing but just one of the many factors of why we are multicultural. In the pre nineteen eighties Australia wasn't quite as tolerant as demonstrated by the whites only policy. This policy was very unfair and made sure that people who weren't "Aussie enough" were not granted access to Australia.
